isn't the gift always unexpected? for the gift to be gift can it meet any expectation? can it emerge within the logic of reciprocity and yet remain the gift?

we were in a big corporate music store in this trendy faux-urban area just south of us the other day when i discovered that my youngest, who was at that time four years old, is one of the most detail observant people i know. she picked up the green day dookie CD, pointed to the back of it and said simply, "Hey dad, Ernie isn't on this one." woah.

much of the church has become one big christian porn machine according to CPM.
foucault said: there is a difference between art and propaganda and in fact there is no difference between propaganda and pornography
he then went on to explain:
art is to promote reflection on deep seeded emotion
propaganda and pornography are used to simply get immediate reaction and promote gratification or action. They do not promote thought but rather inhibit it by getting the observer to ignore what he or she actually thinks/believes and act in accordance with the propagandist or pornographer.
got these quote from the CPM site...

spirituality is about intimacy spirituality is as much akin to prolonged tantric orgasm as it is rote monastic rites.
life amidst the mystery of that which enables and inhabits all that is and is not... this is spirituality.
it may be easier for us to conceive of it as life with a lover.
the sense of having lost yourself and yet being fully at home,
that place of utter trust that speaks no demand,
that moment of intimate touch that no one else knows save the one you are with,
the quiet oneness of silent connection,
the utter dismantling and recalibration of life in the initial shock of the moment,
and the ongoing rebirth of life together.

have no institutional excuses for why they are not changing the world are impassioned by the sublime in the ordinary truly cannot fathom the concept of religious guilt live out the nuances of appropriate conversational disclosure... ...all the while never being two faced feel mystery with me as much as they talk detail with me act like money and vocation are means for experience and relationship find their identity in an undisclosed place expect pain, but live for love fear only broken trust

wasteful. isn't everything of the soul wasteful? the sensuality of worship love's sacred outpouring the sacrifice of friendship waste is negative when mere accumulation and usefulness are the heart's motivation and boundaries

U.S. Will Seek to Fingerprint Visas' Holders (registration required)
There is a policy change in the works that will require fingerprints from visa holders from certain, "high risk," countries. The problem here is both image and efficacy. In terms of image the USoA comes off as a discriminatory police state. In terms of efficacy either terrorists will not register upon entering the country or they will simply register and not care. If INS resources are going to be invested in profiling and tracking there must be better ways to go about this.
What's the logic of this? Anyone who's truly dangerous is not going to show up to be registered. -Jeanne Butterfield, executive director of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
This is an overtly discriminatory, inefficient and ineffective way to deal with the problem. This is targeting a group of people, the overwhelming majority of whom are innocent, but whose lives will be turned upside down. The message it sends is that we're becoming like the Soviet Union, with people registering at police stations. -James J. Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute

Death is an imposter no more than birth is. We emerge from unknowing and are again enfolded into unknowing. Amidst the contingency of our current knowing we walk in faith.

MIT student hacks into Xbox - Tech News - CNET.com
A computer sciences graduate student is claiming to have cracked the security systems that prevent Microsoft's Xbox game console from running unauthorized software.
In a research paper published a few days ago, Massachusetts Institute of Technology student Andrew Huang detailed the procedure by which he retrieved the software "keys" that a game disc must contain for the Xbox to recognize its contents as legitimate code. Using the key, hackers presumably could write Web browsers, MP3 players and other sought-after applications for the console....
Huang said he's working on a way to break down the Xbox security system in a way that will allow him to legally share the results of his work. He anticipates an explosion of open-source software using the Xbox as a high-performance, low-cost PC replacement.
"I'm trying to find a legal way to create a boot ROM," he said. "Hopefully, in a couple of months we'll have a canned, easy-to-use solution that will allow people to write their own code."

Jesus Fan Club Dues
post from beeow re: the last axxess sunday gathering... saw this on winter runner's livejournal.
Stopped by this community that mistook itself for a church's last official in-house meeting tonight, on account of I used to go. Back before I lost religion, before I lost faith. Actually, at the time, it was the only "church" that could've kept me in doors, because it wasn't trying to be a "church"....
I left when they became another church in a long line of churches discussing things like budgets and hiring full time ministers and big consumer church things (and I have deeply negative feelings about anything like that), but now I think they're in a perfect place. They've become what they were trying to from the beginning, like the early "believers", a bunch of people sharing their lives sincerely, sharing faith without a catchy program or an alterior motive like paying your Jesus fan club dues. Sharing it the way I think Christ might've hoped for. In the way they live.
Consumer+conversion=cash reward for Jesuservant godmerchants....
I guess if this community clears the slate, forgets their engrained ideas about "church" and embraces this terrific new opportunity, there might actually be the chance of some kind spiritual revival on this physical plane. What must look like failure to them, seems an awful lot like success to me. They've come full circle, they've returned to the purest form of "church". It's Jesus as Tyler Durden. Except I think he appreciates it when you ask questions. Shows you care.
And it's about time somebody questioned the spiritual status quo in consumerland. Maybe those guys who just buried their building finally can. I'll be rooting for them.

so i found a new energy drink today.
i am fascinated by these things--have been for years. i drank Jolt before it was cool (ok, in some quarters it has always been cool... enough bragging, dan).
anyway, this new one stands out not for its potency... i still prefer Hansen's Energy or, if HE is not available, Sobe Adrenaline in terms of potency... but this new (to me) drink stands out in an area that no one has touched in the energy drink market. it has 0 calories, 0 carbs, 0 fat... and it tastes good. that is a very tall order. it still packs the caf/herb punch, but without the liquid fat effect.
what is this new miracle drink you ask? Twinlab's Energy Fuel.
