BBC Newsround | MUSIC | Jacko's red-faced after MTV mix-up
"i'd like to thank God, my parents and the magician David Blaine..." -woah, the spirit of Derek Zoolander took over Michael at the VMAs... i didn't see this... was it really a mix-up?

BBC NEWS | World | Middle East | Dart bombs 'killed four Palestinians'
flechettes: another fascinating way to kill and maim large numbers of people... this is like a frickin' mine field in the sky... new battle technologies are beginning to chip away at our perception of the human cost of war. when you have to send out your young with axes a la braveheart there seems to be a more palpable sense for the price involved in ordering an attack. maybe not. maybe that is idealizing some period of the technologies of violence. it just seems that the more we remove ourselves from the equation the less human the other in the exchange of violence becomes. when you are raised on the gamecube and then are thrust in front of an ultra-advanced battle HUD the outcome of your gaming prowess seems shielded in a manner that i can only describe as haunting.

so some, probably well meaning, christians trolling this blog seem not to like my take on the war on terrorism and not judging (probably more infuriated by my globalist quote)... bringing up the "just war" doctrine, etc, etc. whatever. we are teetering on the edge of that doctrine from where i sit.
quick response: in all of our self-righteous war talk we lose sight of the only thing that could make us anything akin to a nation with a strong christian heritage--loving our enemies. until the clique that bemoans prayer being taken out of school begins to speak out against the hawkish posture of our leaders self-identified as christian i find it quite difficult to align myself with the myopia of a people drunk on their own influence. just me. peace out.

The Globalist | Is America Turning Into An Elective Dictatorship?
President Bush and his advisors, breaking with the constitutional tradition, claim something breathtaking: A U.S. president, in the absence of an attack or imminent attack on the United States, its armed forces or treaty allies — can undertake a pre-emptive war against any country that this or that president thinks might pose a speculative threat in the future.
According to the Bush Administration, the president can order as many as a quarter of a million U.S. soldiers to invade Iraq — and occupy it indefinitely without any further authorization by the U.S. Congress and the UN Security Council, which authorized the first Gulf War. The Founding Fathers would have been shocked by these claims.

do not judge, and you will not be judged. do not condemn. you will not be condemned. forgive and you will be forgiven. Q17
do not judge. period. jesus says it with a characteristic finality as if it were as natural as saying, "breathe air." do not judge if you wish not to be judged.
as i sit here my mind is brought to this pericopi by a conversation about cancer that i had. cancer, like AIDS and so many other ailments, has often been seen in times past (and present) in the light of divine retribution or karmic justice. madness, as in the case of nietzsche, and misfortune have also been deemed worthy weapons in the divine arsenal of ruin. why do we narrate life such? why do we look at a trajectory of occurrences and immediately seek to attach some value to the process and varied outcomes? why do we judge?
you cannot simultaneously judge and console. you cannot judge and bring a touch of healing. you cannot judge and speak life.
to judge presumes both the right and the perspective to do so. neither of which we possess. don't judge--love. even your enemies. wow. counter culture is becoming pretty clearly demarcated in our hawkish, self-righteous time.
peace and love to those unwilling to judge and to those yet unable to not.

my 9 year old and i were doing a read through of d.hopkins play that a.trust is putting on in a couple weeks. we broke off after act one and sarah was giddy with excitement wanting to finish it all... but given that it was nearly 11pm we deferred. it is cool to see her so enamoured with theatre. david, sarah was moved by the new dialogue between will and zoe.

so, here i sit, eating my turkey and swiss on wheatberry bread, sipping a diet coke and trolling my daily blogs. i check in with jason.evans. he has a tag board on his site. as i read the thread it is three people from very different perspectives interacting about art, faith, politics and vocation in a matter of 12 lines. here is what i could see of the convo (you have to read it from the bottom to the top):
jason: "re-ordering of faith life"... I like it hansel: i work computers here and enjoy trying to live as much as thinking. bonhoeffer's last thinking is pulling us euro typez into a rather substantial reordering of faith life. hansel: pullin pub must bea peace of english i don't know. jason: hansel, when you're done pullin' pud let us know what you're doing in Amsterdam... yes, yes we've heard it before, "*beep* us Americans"... hansel: haha. love that. master bate was *beep'd*. you americans. come to amsterdam. the kingdom seems to be more than puritan values. wat about you governments injustice in the middle east and on and on hansel: jack... dude, you are freaking us out... chill, baby. go *beep* or something. jason: no, that you don't want to support satanists... dude, get a grip jack: it's a good thing that they are satanists? what?!! jason: that's probably a good thing jack: yeah, the site just weirded me out. I don't want to support satanists jason: i doubt they're satanists, it was a good article, did you even read it ...
what fascinates me with this is that this hansel is right in my book. his reference to dietrich.bonhoeffer is worthy. i have been rereading letters and papers from prison and am encouraged by the vistas that bonhoeffer was willing to open in a rethinking/reenactment of faith. as i read i keep asking myself, "why didn't my parent's generation stand on dietrich's shoulders and take this someplace?" his thoughts are interesting seeds to help germinate new spiritual thought. oh, and those who think that they know bonhoeffer from reading ethics or the cost of discipleship need to read letters and papers. he is a different person in his final writing from his home in a nazi prison camp. it is only in this late work that we begin to see bonhoeffer the man. anyway... read the book. my sandwich is gone and i need to go. oh, btw, i was hansel. just trying to add some spice to life. peace.

Iran's President Trying to Limit Power of Clergy
strong words from iran's president. in a political culture where understatement has evolved to a nuanced frenzy khatami's statement about alternatives is striking! go khatami.
"We cannot speak of democracy if we are not ready to play by its rules," he added. "The main aspect of democracy is the right of people to change a government if they do not like it."
"Unfortunately I have had no success," he said. "My warnings have been ignored, and the president's duties, which are clearly stated in the Constitution, have been suspended."
Chief among those duties, he said, was to enforce the Constitution, and he insisted that at a minimum he should have the power to do so.
"A president who cannot perform that role is no good," he warned, "and we will seek other alternatives if this fails."

Andrew Sullivan posts some thoughts by Camille Paglia on the US-Israel-Arab disfunction that seems to underlie the issues in Palestine and much of the global terrorism we are now witnessing.

Amazon Honor System | Giving - TheyBlinked woohoo! thanks to the anonymous patron who was the first to throw a sacagawea into my bowl! yes, you indeed rock. some of you might be thinking, "wait a minute, you ain't no stinkin' 501c3. what about my tax write off?" (said in the voice of arch-veggie pirate/love song crooner mr. lunt). if that is your concern consider whether, one, you take a standard deduction and don't itemize anyway (making the deductibility of a gift immaterial), or, two, just envision this site as an annoying guy on the corner with a sign as you drive to the mall. either way giving remains so easy. and if you give right now we'll throw in these beautiful urim and thumim so that you can divine the will of the almighty in the comfort of your own home!

BBC NEWS | UK | 'Workers take gap years too'
It's a rite of passage: get your A-levels, go backpacking around Asia and Australia, and then go home to start your degree. Some even do it all again afterwards, before settling down to become wage slaves.
But is that our only chance for a bit of adventure?...
It's an upheaval, but a long trip can be a great way to step back and regain some perspective on life. Some go back to their old jobs; others take the opportunity to make a fresh start.

Vaux_Greyspace
At Vaux we are interested in discovering an urban spirituality: some way of doing faith that takes the context of the city seriously.
vaux is a london-based community that may be the definition of what is left of church that still makes sense to a generation grown up citizens of the EU, post-catholicism and post-reformation...
or, maybe they define nothing and just have cool spiritual experiences together.

BBC NEWS | Politics | Straw to back EU constitution The Globalist | Global Diplomacy | Europe’s Miracle
the EU idea is so intriguing to me. watching a potential superstate emerge from a very, very loosely connected collection of nation states is an unfolding history of a great power my great grandchildren will study. the obvious challenges and serious questions around issues of identity, sovereignty, currency, oppression, power sharing, et al are a political historian's delight.

so... there is this company that has a pile of cash, in fact, whose primary asset is a pile of cash, who is fighting for the right to burn that cash and die a natural death. some of those invested in this company want to euthanize this monstrosity and write a check to each stockholder from the cash on hand--which incidentally would end up being more money per share than the current stock price. the company is liquid audio. but if you know me you have probably already guessed that i am talking about a more pervasive, decentralized company as well.

are there any who could see the value in a living antithesis to our pace? not all may be called, but can those who are find a way to, live slower, to pray longer, to breathe deeper, to think, to speak, to touch, to work , for those without economic justification for the focus, can we together, shake the world again?
(some would call this life unproductive a myopia of sorts a spiritual self-obsession an act of pseudo-sacramental masturbation funny, i see it as exactly the opposite i see our culture's spiritual gurus of success between those words)
is there another path that will help us remember who we used to be? who we yet can be?

The Power of Words
Fernando Flores is pissed off. He has had enough of the bullshit. The 55-year-old philosopher, former Chilean minister of finance, former political prisoner under Augusto Pinochet's rule, has flown halfway around the world, from California to Holland, to transform two executive teams -- 32 leaders in all -- of a global construction giant. These are people accustomed to building on a grand scale. But right now, building is their problem, not their business: Their world-class reputation for being brilliantly managed, it turns out, consists only of hollow words -- words that have little power and less value.... Talk all you want to, Flores says, but if you want to act powerfully, you need to master "speech acts": language rituals that build trust between colleagues and customers, word practices that open your eyes to new possibilities.
