December 30th: The Sixth Day of Christmas
Doing Stuff Together

On the sixth day of Christmas Dan went to see Life Aquatic. Again.

more soon...

(later)

OK, back from Mockingbird Station. Steve Zissou sends his regards. Had you been someone in my commons and had I planned this film outing sooner you could very well have been alerted to my excursion to the movies via my SmartCommons Events.

There are a lot of event planning and notification services out there. SmartCommons doesn't intend to replace or directly compete with Evite or MeetUp or the many other excellent offerings in this space. Damn the event UI is ugly...Really, SmartCommons Events is more like the bulletin board at the VFW hall or the monthly newsletter from your Masjid... but with a twist. The twist is that you can associate your posts so that they are only seen by certain segments of your commons.

SmartCommons Events can currently be created in relationship to four things:

  1. Community - Events created in association with a SmartCommons Community are only visible to other people who are members of that community. So if you create a private community for your weekly picnic group you can post events that are associated with that group that only your fellow picnickers are privy to.

  2. Project - Events created in association with a SmartCommons Project are only visible to other people who are participants in that project. Substitute your new building project for the picnic community in the example above.

  3. Person - Events created in association with a SmartCommons member are only visible to other people who are Friends with that member. This will help you post a graduation party invitation to your cousin's group of friends, but it will not help you keep it a surprise.

  4. Zip - Events created in association with a Zip code are only visible to other people in your general area (USA centric... I'm sorry).

  5. Time Zone - Events created in association with a time zone are only visible to other people in your time zone.

That is it. Events are not very sexy, but they are simple and, potentially, useful.

So, as The Arcade Fire fills the aural crevices of my home allow me to wrap this up by mention that we have an issue with the system periodically logging people off without cause. We are working on this one. Sorry for the inconvenience. Also, an apology to any Safari users out there. I am a Mac user as well so I know that the site is unusable in Safari. It works great in Firefox! Try out that amazing browser until I have a moment to address the Safari imbroglio.

Time for me to go. The mojito awaits.

::Added Bonus::
SmartCommons Tip #2
When you create a SmartCommons Event that is associated with a Community, Project or Person you can mark the event as a "SmartMob" at the time of creation and SmartCommons will immediately send an event alert to the people associated with the Event. (No, I couldn't come up with a term better than Howard Rheingold's).

grosses bisse.
